Understanding the Records

Betting Line Trends

The NBA record section provides a quick look at the production of wins and losses for each team that is playing on the current day.

(Overall Record)
(Away or Home Record)

The Win-Loss is broken up by overall record and either the away or home record, depending on who is the host or the visitor.

NBA Streaks and slumps take place all the time and it's always smart to ride the hot hand and fade the cold one. The Streak feature measured by Wins (W) and Losses (L). If a team wins five straight games, the Streak would read W-5. And if a club is mired in a seven-game losing skid, then you would see L-7 in the Streak column.

Understanding the Spread

ATS is an abbreviation for Against the Spread, which measures the profitability of an NBA team for bettors. NBA does offer money-line wagers but point-spread bets are more popular at the sportsbooks, similar to American football. Even if a team wins a game, the more important factor is covering the spread and those that do will have a much better ATS record. Even a team has a losing overall straight up record, it could be very competitive in games and stay within the oddsmakers' expectations. That's where the value is and a good ATS record on the hardwood usually parallels with a good team on the court.

The NBA Matchups section shows the Line, both the Open and Current numbers by the oddsmakers. For more informed bettors who like extra action, the matchups page shows both 1st Half and 2nd Half betting odds as well. Those wagers are based on the first 24 minutes of the NBA game or the final two quarters minutes plus any additional overtime.

  • Where to Bet:

NBA Betting Trends

The VegasInsider.com NBA Matchups show Betting Trends from sportsbooks and they focus on what users are playing.

The Betting Trend Section receives percentages on three categories.

  • Side (Point-Spread Bets)
  • Money (Money-Line Bets)
  • O/U (Total Bets)

The three betting trends are fairly simple to follow and they're more volatile as tip-off of a game approaches.

The Side percentage is for the point-spread while the Money is for money-line wagers and that field usually skews heavily to favorites since not many bettors expect huge upsets, especially when the point-spread is high. The O/U is the total and the Over is always listed on top of the Under in the last Betting Trend column. Most bettors lean to favorites and overs and keep in mind that it's not uncommon to see 100% to 0% listed for a particular matchup, especially after the betting line is just made available. These trends fluctuate based on the action and until the volume rises, that's a common occurrence.
