WITH a surname like hers, famously private Gretel Packer has done well to remain largely out of headlines for most of her life.
But it was only a matter of time before that recognisable name, synonymous with success and wealth in this country, saw the 49-year-old mother, businesswoman, philanthropist and arts patron wind up on the rich lists.
Ms Packer is Australia's newest billionaire after carving up a deal with her younger brother James. It saw her handed a more-than-$1-billion share of her late father Kerry's fortune, The Australian reports. By severing her financial ties with her brother, the reluctant public figure has been thrust into the spotlight.

While James has to some extent followed in his father's footsteps, taking over parts of the family business and his own money-making pursuits, Gretel has joined the Packer women's tradition of supporting the arts and the family's philanthropic interests.
Launching a $200 million philanthropic fund last year for indigenous education and community welfare and the arts, the Packer Family Foundation's diminutive chairwoman gave a rare speech and interview.
'Philanthropy has always been a part of our life — sometimes private, sometimes public, but always there,' she told the audience, going on to thank her mother Ros and late father for their 'philanthropic legacy' she hoped to build on.
As well as being the 'driving force' behind the generous National Philanthropic Fund, according to her brother, she sits on the board of the Packer-controlled Crown Resorts Foundation.
She is a trustee of the Sydney Theatre Company Foundation, a patron of the Taronga Zoo Foundation and a board member of the Art Gallery of NSW.

'I love performing art, I love music, I love visual art. I have a busy life so it's not every day, but I see it when I can.'
While her professional life is indeed busy, as part of one of the country's most high profile families, Gretel has kept her private life impressively private.

While the financial agreement between Gretel and James signifies the siblings' financial split, they remain close.
Rob Rankin, the chief executive of the Packers' private company Consolidated Press Holdings, which Gretel retains a stake in, told The Australian: 'Gretel and James have always been very close and their love and respect after the settlement is as much if not more than before.'
The deal sees James, who sits at number seven on BRW's rich list, have his wealth reduced from an estimated $6.08 billion to just over $5 billion.
The LA-based billionaire has dismantled most of the multibillion-dollar media empire built by his late father Kerry Packer and grandfather Frank Packer, which included the Nine television network and ACP Magazines.
